I quite agree. But, not only that. The more Avios I have, the less ££££ I have to pay the taxes and the hotels at the other end!
I think my ideal redemption wouldn't be one massive long trip, it would be more along the lines of a couple of 2 1/2 week breaks from the office:
LHR - SIN - SYD - PER... picking up a 4x4 for 2-3 weeks... and returning DRW - SIN - LHR in BA F / Qantas J.
And then another of my usual LHR - IAH, returning PHX - LHR, with another 2-3 weeks in an SUV to enjoy some back-country USA along the way.
One day I'd also like to sail into NYC on board the Queen Mary 2, and return out of JFK with BA. BUT, I really dont think I am cut out for cruising - and that Costa Concordia incident just looked ghastly. So it would only be considered if I could be in one of the top cabins on board, and not have to attend any ghastly "externtainment evenings" or tacky on-board shows. For me, the journey would be about enjoying peace and quiet at sea, a comfortable cabin, great food, seeing what its like on a proper liner AND the experience of arriving into NYC by sea.
