When you book the 241 ticket, ba.com greys out all payment options bar Amex. However, any Amex will do.
Best option is to book your 241 and then cancel. Once booked Amex cannot intervene, no need to keep the card until you fly.
This ties in with my experience. I have paid the taxes with another AmEx rather than the BA one. I'd be prepared to take the risk that Raffles suggests, but wouldn't cancel the card prior to booking the 241 trip. As suggested above why not downgrade to the free card, particularly after booking?
