I think this really does depend - if both of you are on the same >=GCH booking, then assuming that the seats are available anyway, you can book both into 'Gold' seats, however sometimes this requires a call to the YF,GGL,etc. line and is not guaranteed as already posted - no seat assignment is absolutely guaranteed.
Even if you are on the same booking, you cannot choose 1A or 1K for the non-gold. Best option is to to select 1A for the gold and 2A for the non-gold and then keeping checking until about T-24 when the 1K becomes available. You will need to be on your toes to grab the seat. I have used this on 2 occasions now and it has worked well. Seating 1A and 2A is not as terrible as it sounds (jusging by 777 experience) and it is a reasonable fall back option if you cannot get the desired 1K.
