4) I was under the impression that being intoxicated on a plane was illegal? If it's not then surely the airlines and crew would deem it un-safe to have such an intoxicated passenger on board.

If this person ever happens to be in London, i shall buy 8 bottles of Champagne (not dom) for him and see if he can drink them back to back in 12 hours I think he might at the very least, struggle.
