Your profile indicates that you're BAEC Silver, but makes no mention of whether you earn AA miles or have AA status. If you're asking from a BAEC perspective, you've posted in the wrong forum.
Sorry, should have explained a bit more upfront...
I'm flying via JFK to LAS for four reasons:
1) to earn BA status (this return trip will get me the TPs to get from Silver to Gold)
2) to earn BA miles - the London-JFK-LAS return is booked via BA and all on BA metal or BA codeshares, and
3) it was a cheap way to get to North America in Club/Business. London-YYZ direct would have cost way more
4) I've never been to New York and I've got a 20h stop there on the outbound
Unfortunately the "official" reason for me going on this trip is actually happening in YYZ not in LAS, so I'm stuck with the minor issue of getting myself from LAS to YYZ and back again. Gaining Gold and the BA miles is worth the detour :-)
Above you said you need to get from LAS to YYZ, but then you indicate that you're arriving to LAS on AA and looking to get from there to YYZ. Is there a reason you're not just going to book AA to YYZ from wherever you're starting? AA serve YYZ from DFW, LAX and MIA, with seasonal service to ORD...
I'm aware there are lots of great ways to get from JFK to YYZ, routing via LAS not being the most obvious choice ... but hope you understand my reasons now :-)
In any case, if you check in at AA's counters in your city of origin, and you have status that permits free bags on AA, and you're flight onward LAS-YYZ is a connection and not a stopover, you should be able to check those free bags through to YYZ, even on a WS flight. In the reverse, where your first flight ex-YYZ is a WS flight, you'd be subjected to their policies, which differ from AA's.
Does BA Silver get me any kind of status match on AA when I'm checking in at JFK for the LAS flight? I'm actually flying F (booking class A, I think) from JFK to LAS, if that makes any difference. WestJet only fly one class - can I check a bag through from JFK to LAS to YYZ based on flying F and/or being BA Silver status on the AA leg and WestJet will be fine with that?
Thanks for all the advice so far...!
