Are you saying the call center told you explicitly you could add the return later without cancelling and rebooking? My experience wasn't that long ago, but maybe the details were slightly different in a way that mattered (I might have had two existing reservations to consolidate in addition to a new flight to "add").

Edit to clarify-- I understand if you book a RT you can always change the return, but I thought if you book a OW and then want to convert it to a RT you had to cancel the first booking.
