I tried something like that once and they told me they couldn't add the return, they had to cancel both itineraries and rebook, but when they canceled them the Wizard/computer/revenue dept. had reclaimed the J seats and was only making WT+ available (at least that's how it was explained to me, and I can't imagine someone else booked those exact seats in the 1 minute between cancellation and rebooking).

Very frustrating-- I ended up cancelling that itinerary as I was not willing to pay the fuel surcharges to travel in WT+ to MLE, but we were eventually able to get BKK so all was not lost.
