You're really probably entitled to get full UA credit for that flight. Y bonus, lifetime miles, etc. I received original itinerary credit for a ride on Delta last year after a mechanical cancelation. Might be worth a call to the milage plus desk if you care.
If UA accommodates you on another route that naturally earns points (i.e. partner) then there is no obligation on their part to offer original routing credit. If they force you to a carrier that doesn't offer earning in the MP program then you can usually double-dip.
