Lightning never strikes twice...
Flying home from YVR last Saturday (well actually was down in PDX seeing some friends) I got a text from BA saying that the flight would be slightly delayed that evening. Not much, only an hour or so. No problem, I thought. I have plenty of work to do.
About 10 minutes before I left for the airport in PDX I got another text: flight delayed from 20:40 to 02:00 (+1) due to lightning strike. Sorry for the inconvenience.
Phoned up AS who, for a small fee, put me on a later flight so I could hang out in PDX for an extra few hours, which caused a lot of faff with my bags etc, but long story short, finally left YVR about 02:30 or so.
Captain came on to the PA and explained that the a/c (G-BNLV) had been struck on takeoff in Sat's thunderstorms. Not a problem, all was well, but they wanted to check everything out for safety.
Fast forward 9 hours to Sunday evening on approach to LHR, where we pass through a cloud layer and head into our holding pattern, when I see a bright flash and hear a crack sound. Nothing else. About three minutes
After the captain comes on the PA and confirms it- that was another lightning strike. No cabin fireball, sadly.
So the moral of the story is, lightning does sometimes strike twice, especially in lucky BLNV. But why didn't I go straight out and buy a lottery ticket... ;-)
