On the Alaska DOs, I rarely ask for prepayment for the smaller expenses (vans/gas, etc.). Instead, I simply threaten that lack of payment will leave one stranded quite literally in the middle of nowhere. This year, the middle of nowhere will be about 90 miles on a dirt road outside of Nome.
