I was waitlisted for R with a GPU and randomly looked at my reservation- at the bottom of the reservation under the segment that had previously been waitlisted (the R segment, not the originally booked fare class) it showed the message "this segment can be confirmed". The flight itself was showing R=0, but when I called the agent was able to process the upgrade. It is interesting that this did not happen automatically (but I'm happy the R space seemed to have been saved for me to call in and confirm).
I had this happened to me for one of my flight (EWR-HNL) for this year late May. I called up 1K and they cleaned up the res.
However, another of my flight (SFO-HNL) on a RPU did not clear the waitlist even though R=4 and I had seen others had been cleared. Called 1K but agent insisted to me to wait for the sweep but i persisted. She put me on hold and then came back and apologized that the system failed. She instantly cleared me into R class.
