I tip somewhere between $1-3 per day for housekeeping. No matter the level of property I stay at. I like to give the money to the actual person directly. If I don't see them I leave a thank you note with a smile and some money, often on the day of check-out. If I need anything extra, I leave a little note and place $/E 2 on there.
I agree that housekeeping is one of the hardest jobs. So as a little gesture of "helping out" I think it is good to leave a little tip.
But when it gets to the point that the "servants" guilt trip the "rich" into tipping them into Ph.D. territory, the system is truly perverted and I don't participate in that.
In the same sense, a little appeal to the Americans, please don't spoil our staff in Europe. The system there is working. They are by no means rich or well off but they do have health and social benefits and full contracts.
+1 I agree with all these points.
I also try to ask at the front desk for no service from the cleaning staff if my stay is short. These days, as we become more environment conscious, I don't see the point of having my linens and towels changed everyday. Once every 3 days or so is perfectly fine.
