you would have know exactly how it works beforehand, and you could have then saved the time you just spent writing up that long rant.

The way it works is documented endlessly in that thread (as well as many other threads).

FT works best a research tool. It is annoyingly usless if you only visit it after you've mistakes you could have avoided with such research and thus now can only rant.
