I've gotten more hassle at the land crossings coming into the USA from Canada compared to the other direction. Keep in mind, I am an American as well and would think the officer would treat one of their own fellow Americans decently. The last time I crossed over from Detroit to Windsor via the tunnel, here is a summary of what happened:
*Cross over from Detroit to Windsor
*Go to the Casino Windsor, get my car parked, collect my concert ticket at the ticket part of the place, and get my seat to the show about one hour before show time. Attend the show then get my car from the valet after it was finished.
*Return back to Detroit via the tunnel again. Pull up to the border person's booth, show passport then get some of the following questions:
--What was my visit for and how long? (no issue with that)
--How long I owned my then very new car? (a bit personal but not too bad)
--What I did for a living (a bit too personal to be honest, oh well)
--Did I gamble and/or shop while over in Windsor (I said I had no time to do either, and I am someone who rarely likes to feed machines my money to start with anyways) unless they wanted me to declare the fact I purchased 2 Diet Cokes & drank them at the venue before the show started.
--Where I was staying in the Metro Detroit area as I said I was from a fairly decent sized city a few hours north of the area, and did not wish to drive back alone at nearly midnight as a single woman when they asked me where I was from.
Then, I had to pull my car in a secondary screening area, stand and watch them from a distance looking through my car before I was given my passport and keys, thanked for my cooperation then sent on my way. Trust me I was not too pleased with that. Nothing was taken from me, but I have to say I get better treatment returning to US airports after being in Europe.
