Doesn't apply to OP's situation -- while it's better to have a seat assignment than not, having a seat assignment in no way precludes IDB (if that's what ocurred here). It's just easier to IDB someone who has to deal with the gate.

fti said, it's based on when you checked in. If the OP purchased the seat on line, he would be already checked in and far away from being IDBd.
