Perhaps California law is different than in New Jersey, but you said you got a ticket for blocking the box (then discuss how their was even an error on said ticket), however, then you mention you will wait for the ticket to come in the mail.
In NJ, once you get the ticket, you either pay the ticket or call for a court date to contest the ticket. What exactly are you waiting to come in the mail?
Also, again, not being familiar with CA Traffic Court, however, in NJ, non-parking traffic offences, your first appearance is your arraignment on the charge, and you will have the opportunity to speak with the Prosecutor regarding the ticket, and he/she may offer you a lesser offence to plead down to.
In New Jersey, there is an offence "Obstructing Traffic" which is often used, it is a pointless offense, and carries only a fine of 55.00, plus court fees. Then again, you may not get cut any break if blocking the box is something the city may be trying to crack down on.
If you choose to accept the plea offer, you may do so as part of your inital court appearance, and do not have to return a second time. Also, in NJ, at the initial appearance, the "arresting" officer is not present, and would only appear at the actual "trial", should things proceed that far.
Though things could be totally different in California.
Lastly, you are supposed to enter the intersection when you would be able to complete your turn and clear the intersection. Unless the truck became disabled, I do not see much defense that you did not actually commit this offence.
