All those bags that get gate checked have been screened so why should a dress be treated any differently.

Although LH were very nice the ground staff in LHR were not. It was when they were extremely strict on handluggage and a jobsworth refused to let us take the dress plus 1 other rucksack through security. So we had to rearrange and repack everything (Lufthansa had no issue with it, it was just BAA). Luckily we had enough space in another bag to do this for the trip through the scanner and once on the other side we rearrange and repacked everything again into our orginal bag.
