I probably have too much of an americentric bias; I had never heard of Hainan until their name popped up on a consolidator's web site (that's how I got the discount business class tickets), nor have any of my American friends ever heard of the airline before I've mentioned it to them.
Hainan Airlines itself is not that large, but the HNA Group of which it is a part (indeed, the flagship company of the group) is large by anyone's standards (RMB 160 billion turnover). There are 14 airline companies within the group, spread over 3 continents, plus dozens of other businesses including ~100 hotels, logistics, shipping, etc.. If you go down south to Hainan province, you can't go anywhere without running into an HNA enterprise.
