I need a one way ticket MCI-MSP. Delta is the only carrier that flies nonstop.
Revenue tickets are $388 for the date I need.
Award tickets are 25K for a flight that is uncomfortably early or 40K for a perfectly timed flight.
It's a terrible price to pay for a one way ticket, and it is a terrible award redemption since there is no way to do a one way award on Delta.
Is there any workaround for getting a one way award on Delta? (I'm probably dreaming, but FTers are so clever, I thought it would be worth asking!)

no, there is no way to redeem an one way award on delta. Even if they had a skyteam partner that flew this route, Delta would still price it round trip regardless of the partner airlines policy.
Do you have to fly non-stop? If you can fly non-stop you take AA or UA, it will only cost 12,500 miles. There are plenty of ways to get 12,500 miles fairly easily on those two airlines.
Or perhaps the cheapest option would be Frontier Airlines with a stop as well.
