I was under the impression that it had to do with earning ratios, since WN offered the same points/credits for a stay at a Hampton or Homewood as they did at a full-service location. I (for one) took advantage of that fact repeatedly. I'm sure each one would point the finger at the other, but my guess is that WN simply didn't want to offer a $10 rebate for every stay at any Hilton property, and Hilton wasn't willing to pay them more for the points. That being said, partnering up with WN again would bring a LOT of my stays back to Hilton. This change finally pushed me over to Starwood to try my luck as a top-tier elite there. I should still make Diamond but with significantly fewer nights and stays. I have yet to be hit with the premium reward devaluation (fingers crossed!), but dropping WN was what really gave me a wandering eye...
