Recent Stay as Gold
Actually had a great stay at the W a few weeks ago - I had been hesitant to book here based on the reviews, but am glad I did.
I booked a Wonderful Room (on points) and we were given a choice of rooms when we arrived at noon. We took a "Spectacular" room on the top floor, but we were also offered a "Fabulous" room. As others have reported, they are the same floor plans, just with different views and locations.
I realize I'm in the minority, but I really liked the room, and didn't find it cramped at all. It's definitely a studio/loft concept, so those who are used to the "Westin with W furniture" concept will not like these rooms. Having a large shower and closet (with great built-ins) was lovely, and the sink/counter/desk setup actually worked really well for my husband and I. He liked the integrated AV/charging options, and there were enough ledges and shelves underneath to keep things tidy. Coming from other properties in London, I enjoyed actually having enough counter space to get ready in the morning!
The floorplan definitely might not work for everyone, but for single travelers or couples it's not as bad as others have made it sound.
The staff does seem to be addressing the service opportunities that others have mentioned: check-in/out were seamless, the room was immaculate, the concierge made great recommendations for meals, and the door staff was consistent in seeing us off and greeting us with a "welcome back".
The construction in Leicester Square was not an issue, although our room faced a side street, so if you're concerned about the noise ask about that as an option.
We also stayed at the Hyatt Churchill, the Le Meridien Piccadilly, and the Sheraton Park Tower that week (I will post my thoughts on each of those in their appropriate threads), and although the room at the W was smaller, of the three SPG hotels I would return to the W first.
