Indeed MsPhobia is right that I was referring to the European travel regulations, not the Terms and Conditions. As for the BA insurance, I suspect it's not that generous - depending which policy you have. You would get £40 for the 12 hour+ delayed departure to presumably cover the London hotel. You can probably argue with them to get the train ticket back under Missed Departure, but there's no harm contacting them now to see where you stand and reduce the claim paperwork. I don't think it's a very good policy, though I guess it is relatively inexpensive. Serious travellers need to look at either the Amex coverage (provided you book the relevant trip with the Amex card) and/or consider the John Lewis partnership's Independent Traveller policy. The food and drink en route you should get via IB anyway.
I have just had a read over the BA insurance policy and it is pretty useless massive amount of exclusions. It seems London hotel is excluded and for every 12 hour delay there is only £20 compensation. Even the missed train ticket may not be included since it is the HOME COUNTRY's transportation. Another lesson learnt.
