Best Way to Get to South Africa

I agree that Cathay Pacific via HG offers a superior product and so does Emirates if you are in business or first. Last time I checked the AK business awards for these two carriers they were far cheaper than booking directly with SkyMiles on Delta with better seat availability and you get a better ride. Don't forget that Alaska will fly you to the gateway city of the overseas carrier as part of the deal. If you have the miles, given it is one of the longest hops in the world, I would definitely try to go at least with business class. I think it is 26 hours all up and you don't want to arrive there totally wasted. If you go with Cathay, I believe you can get off in HG for a couple of days for no extra charge. There are also award booking services that will fight this battle for you for $150 if you can't get what you want on your own. Also, Beware of BA as they often tag on huge "fuel surcharges" to award tickets.
