I had no trouble on the US side of the border, but several years ago, while heading north with a kayak on top, tent, sleeping bags, fishing poles, and sundries, a camping permit and fishing license in my pocket, I had a rather lengthy discussion with the Canadian side.
After interrogating me on my fishing trip, showing the camping permit and fishing license (well worn from a number of trips north), he asked me how much money I had on me. I told him (around two hundred bucks or so) along with credit cards and an ATM card. He came back with a second agent who told me "Next time you come to Canada, bring enough money for the trip."
I returned across the border with over a hundred. It's hard to spend a lot of money in the wilderness, and the fish sure won't bite it. Never even glanced at my passport.
