Possible to get a refund or travel voucher?

Hello everyone, I have an issue regarding a purchased ticket and am looking for advice.

I purchased a plane ticket on Tuesday afternoon for a wedding I was going to attend in June. Literally the next day I go to work and find out that I am required to travel for work the same week I was going to attend the wedding. I've been trying but it is something I can't move or postpone. I tried calling United within the 24 hour window to cancel the ticket but I could not reach anyone through their automated service. I tried multiple times and all it would do after the automated system confirmed my flight information was tell me to wait while it transfered me to an operator. I was unable to reach anyone, one call waiting almost 50 minutes before hanging up.

Now it is a full 48 hours since I purchased the ticket. Due to my new work travel there is no way I can make the wedding or modify my flight to make it on other dates. This was the only planned trip I had for now so if they offered me the chance to schedule a different flight I really don't have a need right now.

Does anyone know if it is possible to get the value of my ticket purchased turned into a travel voucher? Even though I mentioned refund in the title I am already completely prepared for the response that a refund is not possible or likely. Given my situation are there any other options I have? Any advice or guidance on how to approach this situation is greatly appreciated! I have a bad feeling that I am just out of the money I just paid for the ticket (it was a non refundable ticket). Just figured I'd ask and see how to best approach United whenever I get to speak to a representative.

Thank you,
