It needs to ticket first. The old UA would ticket instantly the new UA can take minutes, hours, or days.

Wait until you get the reciept, then go back and try to upgrade.

You can also confirm it's ticketed by going back into the reservation and it will say "This reservation was ticketed and confirmed on XXXX Central Time"
