As far as the comment about you'd "rather do that than si in an airport lounge", we could do a much shorter layover and skip Athens altogether, but I was specifically making the long stop over so that we could see the Acropolis thinking it would be worth it since I don't know if we'll ever make it back. We've seen the ruins in Rome, and will be going back there later in this same trip, so I have considered just bagging the Acropolis for easier travel, but again, not sure when we'll be back so I sort of feel like we should try to make it happen. Agree?
I have never taken a taxi from ATH airport downtown, but I would expect to pay something between 30-35 Euros. Taxis in Athens are relatively cheap compared to other European cities.

As far as the Acropolis is concerned, IMO Rome is way better maintained than Athens, but if you never were in Athens and don't know if you ever will return, I would definitively do the Acropolis. And if you have time afterwards stroll through the small streets of Monastiraki and Plaka before going back to the airport.
