On at least my last 10 flights, in MAR and APR, Jeff, in the opening video, has asserted that the bin space on all A319s and A320s is going to be increased to accommodate MORE, not less, carry-on.
Unfortunately, those of us who travel mostly for business cannot check certain items because of fragility or value, and with 200 items per day being stolen from luggage at JFK alone, only a fool would check anything valuable.
See here for just a few of the thousands of stories on the web on this subject:

It is so easy for TSA/baggage handlers to steal because the unions will not allow surveillance cameras in the bag search areas, where the bags are rifled by TSA or reportedly marked for the removal of valuable items by the baggage handlers, who are often co-conspirators. If the unions do relent and allow surveillance in all of their work areas, then they will just switch to the bag-marking method, after they have found something interesting in the security search/x-ray.
This is a very serious and underreported problem, and not much is being done to combat it, other than by pax who chose to carry on their valuables/medications rather than checking them.
Also, Senator Chuck Schumer threatened to push legislation to make carry-on a "right" back in 2010, whereupon the majors backed-off of their plans to charge for carry-on. See here:

Sorry, but it's just no going to happen!
I also agree with others here that the "excessive carry-on" argument for boarding delays is a red herring. I have experienced not one late push-back this year! And, on my last international flight from NRT to SFO, I left the club late and got to the gate at 35 minutes to departure and the plane was already fully boarded. 15 minutes to board an 80% full 777, how is that possible? It is possible because they do things better in Japan and have more motivated and professional gate staff.
