Yep it's true..you've been ensnared by the "direct" flight trap. Not only can you not upgrade unless both segments become available..but you'll only earn miles based on the nonstop SAN-HNL distance. Prior to integration the old UA had fixed the mileage posting discrepancy (but not the upgrade issue). But with the system conversion the problem has returned.
This is definitely true for mileage posting...I thought I'd get credit for my ORD-NRT, NRT-SIN flights, but I didn't - just the one posted (ORD-SIN)
You can try to call back, as Pat mentions, but i'm guessing with this new attitude that COdbaUA doesn't really care and it takes them forever to do simple tasks, you'll probably get the same response...but it's worth a try - as the upgrade on the outbound is actually well spent, if you can confirm it!
