Yes, why give away upgrades when they can sell them. I keep seeing pretty decent offers for upgrade to WT+ for the onward flight whenever I check in at MAN. As much as I need the tier points, I never bite because there's a thread elsewhere on this forum about the return them becoming much more restrictive

Well one good reason for giving away upgrades is to retain business from frequent business travelers. I buy maybe 20 long haul business round trips and over 30 WT+ long haul flights ever year with BA, add to that around 30-40 European round trips and that's a pretty good reason to look after your customers with an upgrade every now and again.
