This happened to me at a Hyatt property in Australia. I checked in late and the porter took me to the room with my luggage. As he was putting my luggage into the wardrobe I noticed other suitcases there. The porter said "yeah you're sharing aren't you". After I said no I wasn't sharing, we went back to reception and I got a new room. Nobody at the hotel seemed overly concerned.
