As for Xian, I haven't been yet although I live in Beijing so can't help with that. I would suggest you post that question on the China forum if you haven't done so already, plenty of helpful people on there.
Sorry, can't help the OP, but to say that Beijing is "a little way outside London" as per your handle is pushing it a bit

I hope that you are enjoying China - I was there a couple of weeks ago and loved it.
