Quite so; brand perceptions take time to alter. A lot of people still thought of CO 2005-2012 as the "from worst to first" airline, even though things were degenerating in the post-Gordo world. A lot of people still think of US as a nasty, grubby, bottom-feeding little airline, but I've had some great experiences on US in the last 12-18 months.
Another example of that, ironically, is UA, which had, in fact, improved by leaps and bounds since its nadir in the mid-2000's, but could never shake off the nasty reputation it had gained in that time.
I will give CO credit, though, in that they knew that, the instant you get good reviews, you've got to milk them relentlessly to the max.
Once UA began its latest ascendancy, they were not nearly as proactive in this realm.
