At many U.S. ports of entry, the immigration lines are monitored by officers behind one-way mirrors and/or using mounted video cameras and very sensitive microphones (to listen in on chit chat as people stand in line).
If suspicious behavior is spotted, the observing officer frequently has the capability to send a text message to the interviewing officer.
