Carrying a few hundred in cash is always useful. I've traveled in the US with only $30 in my pocket and $60 to Europe and didn't like it. I would be more comfortable with at least $300-500 if I were in another country for a week or two.

I found that in London, some money changing shops outside Victoria Station give a better rate than the airports and inside the train station.
