Skype account hacked (mad) - evidently happening to others
So last night I get an email from Skype that my request to change my Skype credit from US to Euro was successful - but I didn't request that.
Skype doesn't make it super easy to find cust support, but they have a tech support board which I posted on last night.
So tonight I'm on my normal email account just before going to the Skype tech support board, & find a message saying my Skype handle/login has been changed per my request - which I didn't do - so of course I can't log into my account.
Finally get to Skype live tech support & we go through all the rigamarole. Change id back to what it was & change password to new one.
But the hackers made 5 25Euro charges (top-ups), which pulled money from the account my top-up was linked w/. And evidently made $16 in Skype calls (to country code 37, wherever that is; too tired to search).
So the Skype rep reverses charges on 100 Euros but says I'll have to challenge the 5th w/ the bank, as the hacker made Skype calls. Why they didn't just do all 5 reversals is beyond me. Should I tell Skype to reverse the 5th too?
So then I say well convert my Skype credit back to US & get it back to yesterday's balance. Well I have to do the conversion myself per them, but then - get this - they ding me w/ a currency exchange conversion fee on both the hacked to Euro & the getting it back to normal to US. Talk about insult to injury.
I said I'm not paying the exchange fee, and rep says she'll issue a voucher. I said, so put my account back to what the Skype credit was yesterday, but she can't figure out exactly what that will be until we know what Chase is charging back - something like that.
So I call Chase to do the challenge on the 5th 25Euro & they want to shut down my account, but can't get me a replacement card before I go on the road for a biz trip. Double mad.
So since it's almost midnight here (I was on w/ Skype for 2 hours!) & we think no more charges will be made since my Skype info was changed, we decided to do a 'wait & see' until tomorrow morning. If there are additional charges I'll shut down the account & just bring a few thousand in cash w/ me for the biz trip. If not, then I'll take the card w/ me (along w/ some cash) & shut it down upon my return & get Chase to do the reversal then.
Not sure that makes sense, but it's just before midnight, I'm tired, and worst case I spend the morning w/ Chase.
On a dif note - in reading the Skype tech support board, there were a lot of recent posts about people's accounts getting hacked/lots of charges, so heads up on that.
Cheers.
