US immigration inspectors have a well known and aggressive reputation for linking "boyfriend/girlfriend" with "marriage" and thus an attempt to live in the US permanently by marrying or becoming a fiance of a US citizen or resident.

Just a whiff of that intent is enough to bar entry or even trigger a deportation removal with a re-entry ban for 'x' years.
