Strategy for (patient) churn of Amex cards
As I understand it, it's possible to "churn" Amex cards - you just need to be patient, as it appears the churn period is 2 years. True?
If so, here's my question: Is the required 2 year period two years from the date you close the card and then open up the same card? Or is it two years from the date you open the first card to the date you open the same card?
I've seen stuff on the intertoobs suggesting that it the latter, but am a little skeptical.
My wife and I each have the Amex Delta Gold Skymiles cards. We have had these cards for several years (more than 2 - we got them as refugees when Delta ate Northwest). The renewal date and annual fee for these cards is coming up soon, and I think we're both going to close them.
I have an SPG Amex that I use for my Amex needs (mostly used at Costco), and she will probably be getting one of those soon (we're waiting for a bigger sign-up bonus that's rumored/hoped for in a few months).
We can easily live without the Amex Delta Gold cards for a while if we have another Amex. But I'd like to eventually apply for this same card again when it's safe to do so, to harvest the sign-up bonus. I can wait 2 years if need be, but of course would prefer a shorter waiting period if that works.
How long should I expect to wait - 2 years from the date I close it, or some other date?
Also - any pitfalls about closing Amex cards? We both have very good credit ratings, solid incomes, and one one other Amex (my SPG) between us.
Thanks for the advice!
