Be careful. I have had this happen twice, where a gifted SWU was not taken from my account. The first time, due to something I read on FT, I knew to call AA. Sure enough, AA had subtracted it from the recipient's account; he was not an EXP and had no SWU's in his account, so this left him with a negative balance. Had I not called and gotten this reversed, my SWU would have expired unused and he, when he made EXP the following year or whenever, would have received one less SWU than he should have. The second time was a few weeks ago when the GA pulled my son's stickers instead of my SWU. I got this reversed too, but not without having to deal with a really snippy customer service agent and then 5 follow up calls.
And if one uses it twice, since it was apparently not deducted (and some have reported doing this), one has little recourse to fix the problem later. If, on the other hand, one lets it expire unused there is record of that and it may be easier to remedy things down the road in this case (not easy, but
