I went to India in November 2011 and stayed for three months. The first half of my trip I was too chicken to eat the street food. But after my first experience there was no stopping me. I ate street food a lot but I used some common sense when picking a stall. I ate where the food was freshly prepared rather than where it looked like it was sitting out for a period of time. I ate where there was a crowd rather than at the stand that had no patrons.
Six weeks of eating street food and I never got sick once. I do miss the momos, samosas, aloo tika.....
I think the idea of a food guide is great, probably a good way to learn what the different food items are.
