I was looking on ExpertFlyer (although not for December specifically).
The China Airlines routings can be pretty efficient if you get the late LAX-TPE flight. I have struggled, however, to get Delta agents to confirm CI availability found by ExpertFlyer and Flying Blue. Putting confirmable segments on hold and calling back later to speak with another agent to complete the award routing may help.
A Delta international award ticket will allow one stopover and one open jaw, but not two stopovers. A stopover is defined as a connection >24 hours away.
You could fly, on round-trip mileage:
LAX-Hanoi <stopover>, Hanoi - Ho Chi Minh City (destination) and return from a 3rd city, like Bangkok-Taipei-LAX.
Stopovers must be searched separately on ExpertFlyer.
