Note what
hgdf said above: when using a Gold Upgrade Certificate, there is no reason you need to put your AS Mileage Plan number in (or any airline FFP number at all, for that matter). You are getting the upgrade because of the certificate, not because of any status attached to the Mileage Plan number.
Therefore, the sentiment expressed in the linked thread and in your post doesn't really apply to this situation.
