I will be going to Vietnam for three weeks from mid-June through early July and would like to use miles/points to book the trip. I am fine with flying in coach. My miles/points balances are currently as follows:
AA miles: 212,000
BA Avios: 75,000
I will be flying out of BOS. I believe Japan Airlines is beginning BOS-NRT service to Tokyo later this month on the new Boeing 787, with a connection NRT-SGN to get to my final destination of Ho Chi Minh City.
Assuming award availability on JAL, I'm assuming I can just book this route round-trip.
However, I would also like to possibly extend my trip an extra week and visit a few other cities while in Asia, such as Hong Kong, Tokyo, Singapore, Seoul for a few days each.
I am wondering what is the best usage of miles if I were to do this. Would it just be booking each individual segment on Oneworld partners such as CX and JAL?
Depending on what routes you have it might make more sense to just book them as paid flights, especially if you have budget airlines flying those routes. It really depends.
But your plan to use miles to get to SGN will be difficult to achieve. There is a good chance that all award seats are sold out already. Usually I would book something like this 11 months in advance.
