Good question. I had a v ticket and walked up to the counter at LAX to check in. I had been up all night and told them I know I have a nonupgradeable ticket but is there any way you can upgrade me. They told me they hadro change my ticket class and charged me $300 on my Amex card and then granted me the upgrade.
