What level is above a compact at Heathrow and what types of cars might I expect to see both in my space and in the GC aisle?

Edit: I should specify that I will look for an automatic car so I know that will limit my options considerably. It is hard enough to drive on the other side of the road without worrying about shifting left handed!
Agree with choosing an automatic - as a Brit I always go automatic to drive on the right.

At LHR, I've had a one-class upgrade from compact twice. The first time was a shed of a Ford Kuga (small SUV, Euro equivalent of an Escape though Focus-based) that they wanted to get rid of (31k, FUBARed tracking, body damage) on a one-way; the second time got me into a Skoda Octavia. Generally it's either that or a Jetta in Intermediate, as opposed to a Focus/Astra/Kia Cee'd in Compact.

So your upgrade is from a Focus/Buick Excelle/Kia Forté to a Jetta/budget hatchback Jetta. Yay. If you care about an upgrade, you're better off renting the midsize (Jetta) in automatic if you can get it and hoping for a Vauxhall Insignia (Buick Regal) or Ford Mondeo (Fusion size) as of right or, quite likely in an auto, something more presitigious like an Audi A4/A5 Sportback or Mercedes C-Class (S and F are more likely to be manual in the UK).
