They tend to keep the miles associated with the cancelled PNR assuming you'll use them to get a new award, which can be done online - which works unless you want to ticket the new award for anyone other than the prior awardee. Try calling and telling them "I cancelled a ticket online and I need to have it queued up to have the miles refunded". This seems to do the trick for me. When I last tried 2 weeks ago, they were back in my account before the end of the call. Of course, there's a fee involved unless you're plat/1K/GS.
