Not having looked in awhile, I'm guessing that in the UBB case it probably dumps (or can be made to dump) the user whose password "missed" and the offending IP to a text log file. On linux (the platform in question), that's not a particularly expensive operation, and you could script it in such a way to rotate and compress this log to save space on a daily basis.

I'd have it turned on.
