Actually, that is what is done now. Threads are locked with the flames left in. As was explained to me by a moderator on a different thread, flames are only taken out when the threads are not locked.
I also disagree with the locking of threads -- especially when a flame has been made. Others should have the right to express their opinion of the flamer.

In so far as flaming is concerned (as opposed, say, to multiple ID's or moving threads to the correct board) I really don't see a need for moderators. It would be extremely hypocritical of me to ask to be a moderator when part of my job would be to remove flames -- something I disagree with, even when the flame is aimed at me.
