I have book both places for now to save the dates with points. I have also booked the JW Bangkok for 5 nights to start off our trip and then get over to Phuket second half.
Khao lak is great for exploring nature in the nearby khao sok national park, jungle, and big lake. You NEED a car, easy to book in advance at hkt.
Jw Marriott Phuket still requires a car for exploring the island. My preference is always to stay at khao lak. In fact I stay in Phuket only with kids. during holiday times, it gets crazy busy. You can make easy day trips to Phuket and Krabi from khao lak as well.
Both properties have tennis courts and very nice pool facilities.
