CU might well be your safest bet in such a case.
As a Canadian I am VERY familiar with US Border Control paranoia/behaviour. I prefer to enter the 'Excited States" (Thank You Al Fotheringham, Canadian Journalist) by land and avoid air travel into/outta or through the USA. Unfortunately, Canadian airlines fly over the USA to/from Cuba so USA-imposed rules still apply (and that was a political decision Canada made).

I am not at all concerned if the Yankees know if I fly over their country, BUT I just despise their handling of me as a potential terrorist/?? However, it is their country
